Questions

Frequently asked questions

How does online counselling work?

Sessions are held over a secure video call, so you can meet from wherever you feel most comfortable — usually home. Once you book, you will receive a private link by email. All you need is a quiet space, a stable internet connection, and a device with a camera. Many people find that being in their own surroundings helps them open up more easily.

Do I need to be Christian?

Not at all. Lumina Counselling is openly Christian in its foundation, and people of every faith and of no faith are genuinely welcome. Faith is never imposed on a session. If you would like a biblical perspective woven into the work, it is there for you. If you would rather focus purely on evidence-based counselling, that is completely respected.

Are sessions confidential?

Yes. What you share stays between us. There are a small number of legal and ethical exceptions that every counsellor in Australia must observe: where there is a serious risk of harm to you or someone else, where a child is at risk, or where records are subpoenaed by a court. These limits are explained clearly before your first session, so nothing comes as a surprise.

Do you offer counselling in Spanish?

Yes. Sessions are available in both English and Spanish. Talking about the things that matter most is often easier in the language you dream in, and you are welcome to move between the two languages during a session if that helps.

Can I claim through Medicare?

No. Lumina Counselling is not a registered Medicare provider, so counselling sessions are not eligible for a Medicare rebate and a Mental Health Care Plan does not apply. Some private health funds offer rebates for counselling — it is worth checking directly with your fund. If cost is a barrier, please mention it during your free consultation.

What happens during the free consultation?

It is a relaxed 15-minute conversation, not a session. You can describe what has brought you here, ask anything you would like to know about the approach, and get a feel for whether it suits you. There is no cost, no paperwork and no obligation to book anything afterwards. Finding the right counsellor matters more than finding one quickly.

Is online counselling as effective as face-to-face counselling?

For many of the concerns people bring to counselling — anxiety, stress, low mood, relationship difficulties — research indicates that online sessions can be as effective as meeting in person. It also removes the travel, the waiting room and the postcode barrier, which makes it far easier to keep going week to week. Online counselling is not suitable for crisis or emergency support.
